Top Long Distance Moving Tips

If you’re preparing for a long-distance relocation, you’re probably well aware that the process can be challenging. Getting ready for a move takes a huge amount of time and energy, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed as moving day rapidly approaches.

Despite the stressors, getting ready for a long-distance move doesn’t need to be a pain. With the right know-how, long-distance moving can be simple and straightforward. Interested in finding out how? Keep reading for our 12 long-distance moving tips!

  • Allow Plenty of Time

Above all else, the most important step you can take to simplify your moving process is to allow an ample amount of time to prepare. The more time you have to plan and organize, the better the results will be. Many people start to feel stressed by their move when they feel like they’re running out of time, so if you’re able to accomplish all your moving-related tasks without feeling rushed, it will make a world of difference. Sticking to a timeline without feeling the need to hurry can be one of the most effective ways to improve your move.

  • Create a Comprehensive Checklist

Another great way to stay organized during your long-distance relocation is to create a comprehensive checklist of all the tasks you need to accomplish ahead of your move. Working with a to-do list allows you to keep track of what you need to get done before moving day. Some options to format your list include in order of priority, in chronological order of deadline, or in a calendar format. These different setups can optimize your workflow as you get everything together for your upcoming relocation. Plus, a checklist ensures that nothing slips through the cracks and gets forgotten during the process!

  • Declutter and Downsize First

Before you start packing, decluttering your home is a must. A thorough declutter can absolutely transform your packing and unpacking processes, as it eliminates unnecessary items for your home. To successfully declutter your space, divide your unwanted items into three categories: donate, sell, and throw away. If you’re struggling to determine what you want to get rid of, start by looking in areas where a lot of clutter accumulates, such as closets and cabinets. This is a great opportunity to eliminate belongings that you haven’t used recently and don’t plan on using in the near future.

  • Make Travel Arrangements in Advance

Once you have an established moving day scheduled, it’s wise to begin planning travel arrangements. Since you are completing a long-distance relocation, there are more travel logistics than if you were moving locally. You may need to book plane tickets or hotel stays around the time of your move in the interim between homes. Booking in advance ensures you get the dates you need without any last-minute panicking. Plus, you can usually find lower rates if you book ahead of time.

  • Enlist the Help of Professional Movers

Although completing a relocation without the assistance of professionals is possible, the task can become infinitely easier when you call in the experts. Especially with long-distance relocations, professional moving companies have the knowledge and expertise necessary to maximize efficiency and simplify the task into a convenient process. Movers can transport your belongings in a more safe and secure manner, and if you rely on movers for packing services as well, you can trust that your items will be packed with the utmost protection. This peace of mind and extra help can reduce your stress and take some moving tasks off of your plate.

  • Arrange for Utilities

In advance of your relocation, reach out to your current utility providers to schedule when you will need your services terminated. Doing this in advance ensures that you don’t incur any added fees unexpectedly. In the same vein, be sure to reach out to utility providers in your new city and set up your utilities in a timely fashion. This is crucial, as you will want to make sure your services are set up and ready to go when you move in.

  • Find Free Supplies

Whenever possible, find free or discounted packing supplies so you can cut costs for your long-distance move. Many grocery stores and other retailers will provide extra boxes upon request at no cost, so checking your local stores can be an effective way to obtain cardboard boxes. Additionally, many online marketplaces will have listings posted by people who have recently relocated and have extra supplies. These are great methods to obtain the materials you need without paying for new items.

  • Pack Your Items Strategically

As you pack your belongings for your upcoming long-distance relocation, be strategic about your approach. The most important aspect to consider is protection, as your items will have a long way to travel, and any significant movement can result in damage. To prevent any issues with damages, it’s crucial to pack in a way that limits movement as much as possible.

To do this, try to organize your items methodically within the boxes so they fit snugly inside. If a box is starting to get too heavy but there’s still a lot of open, empty space inside, reinforce the items with something light, such as bubble wrap. Alternatively, you can repurpose your soft household items such as towels. Wrapping these belongings or placing support between items is an effective method to keep your items safe in transit.

  • Use Suitcases When Possible

Got rolling luggage? These suitcases can be your best friends during a move! Because of the convenience of these suitcases being on wheels, this is a great approach to transport your heavier items. If you’re a bookworm, rolling luggage is perfect for transporting your home library, as you can easily load up your books and roll them out of your old home and into your new home. The added convenience of this method is a huge perk!

  • Label Thoroughly

Organization is key when you’re completing a long-distance relocation, and one of the best ways to keep your belongings organized is to label your boxes thoroughly. Not only should you include the corresponding room on the box, but you should also include as much extra detail as possible to make things easier when you start the task of unpacking. Be sure to write the contents in large, bold letters on more than one side of the box so you can easily see what’s inside.

  • Create an Inventory

If you want to take labeling a step further and maximize your level of organization, creating an inventory is the most comprehensive approach to organizing your long-distance relocation. Ideally, for this method, you would create a spreadsheet where each box is assigned a number. You can include this number on the outside of the box. Then, you will list the contents of each box on the spreadsheet so you can keep a complete log of what each box contains. Although this takes a bit more time and attention to detail, it will make the unpacking process feel like a piece of cake!

  • Bring an Essentials Bag

Last but not least, be sure to bring an essentials bag separate from your packed boxes. Since you’re completing a long-distance relocation, you will probably need more essentials to accommodate the longer travel time. Be sure to bring changes of clothes, pajamas, toiletries, medications, and any other necessary items you will need while you’re moving from one home to the other.

Smooth Sailing for Your Long-Distance Relocation

With these steps, long-distance moving doesn’t need to feel like a challenge. In fact, you can make your move surprisingly simple through these methods. Everything You Need to Know About Residential Moving

Although moving is an exciting experience, the process has its fair share of stressors that can make the task overwhelming at times. If you’re currently embarking upon a residential moving journey, it’s more than likely that you’re feeling a combination of emotions, including both happiness and anxiety.

Whether your residential move is local or long-distance, the transition requires a fair amount of time and energy to get everything done in an organized fashion. Interested in finding out everything you need to know ahead of your relocation? Keep reading for our simple guide!

Our Guide to Residential Relocations

Getting ready for a residential move and feeling unsure about what to expect or how to prepare? Discover our eight top steps to moving preparation!

  • Start in Advance

The key to a stress-free residential move is to start planning well in advance of your moving date. Moving involves an array of tasks, and leaving these responsibilities to the last minute can lead to unnecessary chaos and stress. Ideally, you should begin preparing for your move at least two to three months before the scheduled date. The more time you have, the better. It’s never too soon to get started on the planning process. This way, you can avoid feeling pressure as much as possible.

  • Create a To-Do List

Creating a comprehensive to-do list can majorly improve your relocation as a whole, empowering you to stay organized and on top of the moving process. Your list should include all the tasks you need to accomplish leading up to the moving day. Try to list everything in order of when they need to be completed so you don’t lose track of any important deadlines. You can also separate your list into categories to make it more manageable. Utilize whatever methods make it easier for you to manage these tasks.

  • Establish a Budget

Moving can be expensive, so it’s crucial to establish a budget and stick to it. Consider all potential costs, including hiring professional movers or renting a moving truck, purchasing packing materials, any necessary travel accommodations, and whatever additional services you may need. Additionally, as you figure out your finances, be sure to obtain quotes from different moving companies. Receiving several estimates can help you to compare costs and make an informed decision.

  • Allow Plenty of Time for Packing

Packing is one of the most time-consuming aspects of residential moving, so be sure to allow ample time to finish the task without rushing. Being able to take your time during this process is a huge benefit, as it allows you to make packing a more organized process. This will greatly benefit you when it’s time to unpack.

Begin by packing non-essential items as early as possible to avoid a last-minute rush. Start with the items you rarely use, such as seasonal clothing, decorations, or kitchen appliances you won’t need before the move. As the moving date approaches, pack more frequently used items, leaving essential items for last. It’s also best to approach your packing process room by room, and clearly label each box with its contents. Your boxes should be separated by room. This will make unpacking at your new home much more efficient.

  • Protect Fragile Items

Take special care when packing fragile items to ensure they arrive at your new home without damage. Use bubble wrap, packing paper, and other padding materials to protect delicate items like glassware, china, and electronics. Another option is to use household items like blankets and other soft fabrics to add padding as you pack your items. Any boxes containing fragile materials should be labeled as fragile to alert movers and yourself to handle them with care.

For your most valuable and irreplaceable items, consider carrying them personally or insuring them separately to provide additional protection during the move. This can give you the peace of mind you need to quell anxieties throughout your residential relocation.

  • Set Up Utilities

Contact your utility companies well in advance to schedule disconnection at your current residence. Similarly, be sure to schedule set-up at your new home with plenty of time to spare so you don’t experience any delays in the activation of your services. This should include electricity, water, gas, internet, cable, and any other essential services. Arrange for these utilities to be activated before your moving day to ensure a smooth transition into your new home. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to double-check everything about a week before your move, just to confirm everything is scheduled as expected.

  • Notify Necessary Parties

Don’t forget to inform important parties about your change of address. Again, as with all of the items on this list, make sure this is done in advance to avoid any potential issues popping up. Ahead of moving day, update your address with the postal service, your bank, your credit card company, your insurance provider, and any other relevant organizations. Also, remember to update your address on official documents, such as your driver’s license and vehicle registration.

  • Get to Know Your New Area!

Now it’s time for the fun part, getting acquainted with your new home. Take the time to explore your new neighborhood before or shortly after you move in. Familiarize yourself with nearby amenities, such as hospitals, schools, grocery stores, parks, and public transportation options. Engage with your neighbors and join local community events to feel more at home in your new environment. You’ve made it through the moving process, and this is the part where you can start to feel the benefits of your new home!

Keep reading and find out the best ways to effectively complete your Sunshine State move…

  • Move During the Off-Season

One of the most effective ways to reduce costs during a relocation is to move during the off-season. The most popular time to move is from May to September, the summer months, so moving during other times of year can cut the price of professional movers or moving trucks.

However, if you’re completing a move in Florida, you’re well aware that the summer months are the most troublesome in terms of the climate. While the summertime in most places is typically hot, you can expect extreme heat and humidity in Florida, which is why avoiding this time of year during your move might be for the best.

Save yourself the trouble of dealing with a Florida summer as you move into a new home, and opt for the cooler months instead. Plus, since Florida’s tourism skyrockets during the summer, you might want to avoid this hectic time of year.

  • Plan and Budget

As with any relocation, creating a thorough plan first is the most effective way to tackle all the tasks involved with moving. Making a schedule or a comprehensive to-do list as soon as you know you’re moving is a great step to minimize stress and ensure you stay on task throughout your relocation.

Additionally, be sure to create a budget so you can properly prepare for any costs associated with moving and understand your financial limitations. After all, moving can be an expensive process, so creating a budget can help with keeping your spending in check.

  • Organize Your Home

Before you relocate, organize your home by completing a thorough declutter. By eliminating excess clutter in your home prior to moving, you can effectively decrease the cost of movers by reducing the weight of the items you need to move.

Plus, when you arrive in your new home, you will have less to unpack, and your space will be significantly less cluttered. How do you go about decluttering? Divide your items into categories of donate, sell, trash, and keep.

A great way to get rid of many of your belongings is to host a yard sale or to donate to a local secondhand store. As long as your items are in good condition, you can easily eliminate many of your items this way.

  • Update Your Address

Ahead of your move, be sure to update your address with any necessary parties. This includes the postal service, your bank, your insurance provider, your employer, and many more.

Additionally, if you’re moving from out of state, promptly update your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and voter registration within the required time frame. Visit the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website for specific information on the necessary documents and processes.

  • Set Up Utilities

An important aspect to handle in advance of your relocation is the activation of your utilities. Doing this in a timely manner is an essential task to ensure a smooth transition to your new home.

Start by creating a list of the utilities you’ll need, such as electricity, gas, water, internet, and television. Contact your current utility providers to notify them of your move, and arrange for your service to be disconnected on your move-out date. Then, reach out to the utility companies at your new address to schedule the setup of your new services.

  • Pack With Care

One of the biggest parts of prepping for a move is packing your belongings. This can be a long and tiring task, so it’s important to divide the project into smaller chunks to simplify the process and make it feel less overwhelming.

As you pack, be mindful of the amount of protection you use to reinforce your belongings. Use protective materials such as bubble wrap or packing paper, or you can opt to use blankets or towels to wrap fragile items. You should aim to limit the amount of possible movement within your boxes in order to maximize the protection of your belongings in transit.

  • Prepare for the Weather

It’s no secret that Florida is hot and humid. Because of these weather conditions, it’s crucial to properly prepare for the climate to have a safe and successful moving day.

As you move your items into your new home, make sure to take regular breaks and stay hydrated throughout the process. Neglecting these important needs can be dangerous in extreme heat. Additionally, be aware of the Atlantic hurricane season, which takes place from June 1 to November 30. If you’re moving during this time of year, stay updated on the weather forecast in case any tropical storms are headed your way.

  • Hire Dependable Movers

If you’re looking for the most convenient approach to simplify your move, relying on the help of dependable professional movers can make the biggest difference.

Because these moving experts have the necessary knowledge and experience, they can streamline the process and handle the logistical components of your move so you can focus on more personal matters instead.

Many moving companies also offer packing and storage solutions, allowing you to access full-service solutions that make your move as easy as possible. Be sure to thoroughly research moving companies and look through reviews and other information to confirm that they are a legitimate, reliable company.

Essential Tasks for Local Moving

If you’re in the process of completing a local move, it’s easy to feel stressed and overwhelmed. After all, the task takes a lot of time and energy in order to complete everything in an organized and timely fashion.

How to Make Local Moving Easy

You might be wondering, “What’s the secret to an easy, successful local relocation?” By completing a few essential tasks, you can simplify your move and improve your overall experience. Interested in finding out the seven key steps to a convenient, stress-free move? Keep reading and discover just how simple your local relocation can be!

Create a Timeline and To-Do List

First on our list of tasks is essentially to get organized. How can you do this? It might actually be easier than you’re expecting. Start in advance so you have plenty of time, and create your plan. This place should include some form of a timeline, a to-do list, and even a budget.

These elements can help you to stay on track throughout your move and make the process more organized and manageable. Your timeline can act as a schedule that ensures you don’t let any important tasks slip through the cracks. With this method, everything is more likely to be completed in a timely manner.

Get Rid of Unneeded Items

Next on your list, you should aim to clear out all the items you no longer want or need. By decluttering these belongings, you gain a lot of different benefits. First, you will, of course, eliminate clutter in your home, providing you with a clean slate as you transition into your new home. Additionally, you will save plenty of time on packing and unpacking since you’ll have less items to take care of. This can be a huge relief, especially since the packing process can be lengthy.

To get rid of these items effectively, it’s helpful to divide your belongings into different categories — donate, sell, throw away, and keep. If you’re struggling to eliminate items, try to determine what you haven’t used in the past few months and don’t plan on using in the next few months. This is an effective way to decide which belongings are no longer needed.

Notify the Necessary Parties

As you work towards moving day, there are plenty of parties who will need to know about your relocation and process your change of address.

This includes the postal service, your insurance company, your bank, your credit card company, any schools you or your family attend, your place of work, the IRS, and any other important companies or services you are involved with. It’s crucial to do this within a timely manner so there aren’t any delays in this change being processed, ensuring you receive all mail that is sent to you without issues.

Enlist the Help of Friends (or Movers!)

Moving can be an extremely overwhelming task without the proper assistance. There’s a lot to get done before your relocation, and when you’re trying to tackle all of it without any help, it’s understandable to feel stressed.

To avoid these stressors, ask friends and family if they can provide assistance, whether it’s helping you get all packed up or moving items in and out on moving day. This can go a long way in improving your experience. Another great idea to consider is hiring a professional moving company to assist you.

These companies offer a wide array of services that can simplify your relocation and make the process much easier. Need an extra hand with packing? Moving companies can get the job done for you. Looking for extra manpower on moving day? Enlist the help of professional movers to do the heavy lifting. These solutions are a great option if you want an extra hand for your move.

Pack in Manageable Chunks

Because packing can be such a laborious process, it’s important to avoid cramming the entire task into a short period of time. Rushing through your packing can cause undue stress, so it’s best to avoid moving through the job too quickly.

Instead, work through packing in small chunks, doing only manageable amounts at a time to complete the job in an organized fashion. Start with the items you use the least, and then slowly move towards the items you use more regularly. The final items you pack will likely be the essentials that you’ll put in a bag or box to keep with you on moving day.

During this process, be sure to keep items from the same room in the same box. Mixing items from different rooms into one box can ultimately be confusing when you unpack your belongings in your new space.

Transfer Your Utilities

When you move to a new home, one essential task is transferring your utilities. This process involves moving all necessary services such as electricity, gas, water, and internet to your new residence while disconnecting them from your old one.

Because you’re moving locally, you will likely be able to use the same service providers. Contact each utility provider well in advance to schedule the transfer without any delays. This allows your providers to arrange for a smooth transition and prevents any undesirable interruptions in service. By being proactive in the transfer of your utilities, you can enjoy a seamless transition to your new home and have all the essential services up and running in your new home when you arrive.

Make Arrangements for Children and Pets

Finally, if you’re moving with small children or pets, it’s important to make the necessary plans for them on moving day so they are kept safe and sound while you complete your move. Arrange for childcare or a pet sitter as needed, or plan to have someone present who can focus on watching your children or pets. Having the necessary assistance during the process is necessary to avoid stress on moving day.

Local Moving Done Right

With these tips, your local move can be completed confidently and successfully, and you can focus on settling into your new home. As you tackle these tasks, don’t handle the process alone — enlist the help of Coral Springs Moving & Storage to make your move as easy as possible.

How to Prepare for Moving

It’s no secret — moving can be hard. As you get ready to relocate to a new home, whether you’re moving near or far, it’s understandable to feel stressed or overwhelmed. However, with the correct preparation, relocating doesn’t need to be arduous. In fact, it’s possible to transform your move with the right steps. Keep reading, and find out our simple tips on how to make your next move a huge success!

How to Make a Moving Strategy

The first step you should take as you prepare for your move is to create a to-do list. Your moving checklist will provide you with an excellent guide to keep you on track for your relocation. Your to-do list should include all of your moving-related tasks in order of priority.

Having the items in chronological order will allow you to finish everything in the necessary time frame without missing any important deadlines. You can also create a moving calendar if this format works better for you, which will allow you to lay out a schedule for everything you need to complete before moving day.

Oftentimes, tasks can become more anxiety-inducing if you feel like you might be forgetting to do something. Keeping a running list of the tasks you need to complete will be helpful in keeping your mind at ease as you stay on track with your move.

Decluttering Your Home

One of the most beneficial steps for moving preparation is to complete a declutter before you even start packing. What does this mean? Decluttering entails getting rid of items you no longer want or need in your home — usually the belongings you use infrequently or perhaps don’t use at all. You can do this by dividing your belongings into four categories: donate, sell, trash, and keep. By taking the time to declutter, you cut down on the amount of time and energy spent packing and unpacking.

If you jump into this process and struggle to get rid of items, don’t worry, as this is a common struggle that many people face as they try to declutter their homes. It can feel overwhelming to get rid of your belongings, even the items you no longer use.

To make the process a bit easier, rely on the help of a trusted loved one to help you determine what it’s time to let go of. Luckily, when you declutter your belongings, it doesn’t mean these items go to waste. You can sell your belongings to interested buyers by hosting a yard sale or donate to your local secondhand shop so someone else can give your items a new home. These are excellent options for items that are still in good condition.

How to Look for a Moving Company

As you prepare to relocate to a new home, having a reliable moving company in your corner can be the difference between a stressful move and a stress-free move. Professional movers are a valuable asset to invest in as you get ready to move.

Although it’s definitely possible to complete a move without additional help, these professionals have the power to transform your move completely, which can be especially beneficial considering how much time and energy it takes to relocate. Rather than handling things on your own, take advantage of the option to rely on expert help. These moving professionals understand the ins and outs of relocating and are able to complete these tasks efficiently and with the necessary expertise to simplify the process.

In order to find the best moving company for you and your needs, be sure to assess various options. This will allow you to find the best fit for you, and it also helps to ensure you avoid any fraudulent movers. As you search for the right company, be sure to read through online reviews and check the movers’ credentials to confirm that they are properly licensed and insured. These steps are crucial to finding trustworthy movers.

Don’t Forget a Change of Address

When you move to a new place, there are various institutions that need to be notified about your change of address. In many cases, this updated address is especially important so you can receive important mail such as bills or other documents.

To avoid any mishaps, update companies and other necessary parties with your new address as soon as possible. Your bank, your place of work, your insurance, the IRS, the post office, and any other places that need to regularly contact you with important information. Be sure you do this far enough in advance, allowing time for the change to process before you arrive at your new home.

How to Plan Your Packing Process

The final tip to make your move a success is to take your time with the packing process. Understandably, this is usually the most time-consuming aspect of any move, as it requires a lot of energy and work to gather your belongings into boxes and prepare them for transport.

In order to avoid any difficulties as you tackle packing, start packing far in advance of your move, and divide the task into manageable chunks to avoid feeling stressed throughout the process. The more time you take to pack your belongings, the more organized your boxes will be.

This makes moving feel a lot less stressful, and it also reduces the time and energy required to unpack. In reality, by taking more time to prepare, you save yourself some time in the long run!

How to Get Ready for Moving

To successfully complete a move, whether it’s local or long distance, preparation is the most important aspect to make the process easier and more convenient. With proper planning, you can positively transform your move and reduce your stress levels.

Looking for moving companies in South Florida to help you improve your relocation? Count on Coral Springs Moving & Storage to provide you with efficient, reliable moving and storage solutions! The Ultimate Moving Checklist

Along with planning, preparing, sorting, and packing, cleaning is also something that will need to be on your radar when you are getting ready to move. You will need to clean out your home before you move out for the next residents, and you may also need to clean your new home before you unpack! Spring is the most popular time of the year to move – and with it comes extra dust, pollen, and debris. Here is a thorough spring cleaning checklist to help you throughout your moving process.

Before You Begin, Make Sure That You Have the Following Cleaning Tools & Supplies:

• Broom, Dustpan
• Mop, Bucket
• Vacuum
• Duster
• Sponges
• All purpose cleaner
• Rags for cleaning
• Window cleaner
• Disposable gloves

Cleaning One Room at a Time
Sometimes it may be easier to clean room by room than to start with dusting or vacuuming the entire house. Dust and dirt spread more easily from room to room than if you tackle everything in a room all at once. As you move through your house, start with the basics:

• Dust first – this way it won’t dirty the floor that you have already cleaned
• Clear cobwebs and debris from ceiling and dust any ceiling fans
• Wipe walls, windowsills, and baseboards
• Spray glass windows and wipe clean

Kitchen
The kitchen is possibly the most difficult room in the house to clean! With so many appliances that can get greasy with cooking, you will want to be sure that you have the right sprays and cleaners to work with. Find something that cuts through grease. Vinegar can also come in handy.

Things to Clean in the Kitchen

  • Stove & Oven – while you deep clean, be careful as you do this to make sure that you don’t accidentally turn on appliances while cleaning.
  • Refrigerator – start by going through your fridge and throwing away anything old or unused. Condiments especially tend to sit in the fridge for longer than they should. Wipe everything down before putting your food back in.
  • Freezer – the best way to clean out your freezer is to let it defrost. Wipe it out once it’s defrosted before turning it back on (or leave it off if you are moving out soon).
  • Backsplash – make sure to use a tough degreasing agent while doing this.
  • Wipe all surfaces, cabinets, and countertops – a simple all-purpose cleaner or vinegar will do the trick.

Bathroom

Yuck – nobody likes to clean the bathroom. But the more often you do it, the less dirty it can get over time. Here’s what to do:

  • Shower/Tub/Sink – use a bathroom cleaner with bleach or hydrogen dioxide to get the white look back on your appliances.
  • Toilet – if you don’t like to use hefty toilet bowl cleaner, you can use vinegar as a replacement for tough stains.
  • Mirror – wipe with a glass cleaner
  • Tiles – mold & mildew love to live between bathroom tiles, so make sure to use a little elbow grease when tackling this part!

Garage/Attic/Storage Spaces

If a move is on your horizon, you may wish to consider renting a storage solution like a unit or a portable storage unit so that you can sort and clean out your garage, attic, shed, or storage space ahead of time. These spaces often build up with dirt and dust because they are not built like the rest of the home. Pay special attention to dust and wear a mask or goggles if you need to.
